After a diagnosis of aortic valve disease and an aortic aneurysm, Pete and Amy Johnson learned firsthand the lack of information and resources available. 


Rock from the Heart was born from a vision of hope and determination as Pete lay in his hospital bed prior to surgery. 


Faced with a life-altering aortic disease diagnosis, he and his wife, Amy, found strength in their love for each other and their shared passion for music. Amid the uncertainty and fear, the couple envisioned a way to bring awareness to aortic health and support others on similar journeys. 


This vision grew into Rock from the Heart, a nonprofit organization that combines the power of music with a mission to educate and inspire. Today, Rock from the Heart hosts events that raise awareness about heart disease, provide resources for patients and families, and culminates in an annual benefit concert where they rock from the heart. 


Their story shows how a spark of hope in the darkest of times can ignite a movement that touches countless lives.

Our Mission

Rock from the Heart's mission is to proactively educate people about aortic and heart valve disease, bridge the gap between impacted families and the support they need, connect those diagnosed with vital resources, and inspire all through the healing power of music.   

  

Who We Are

Rock from the Heart is a community of survivors, caregivers, educators, and music fans united by a shared mission: to raise awareness and provide support around aortic and heart valve disease. We believe in creating an inclusive space where people can connect, learn, and lift each other up.


Why It Matters

Aortic conditions—including valve disease, aneurysms, and dissections—are often silent and strike without warning. Early detection saves lives, but patients also need support, education, and resources to navigate a complex healthcare system. That’s where Rock from the Heart steps in.


What We Do

Support & Education: We provide resources, patient programs, and educational opportunities for individuals and families. Knowledge is power, and we empower people to make informed decisions about their health. 

Inspiration Through Music: Our benefit concerts use the universal language of music to uplift spirits, celebrate survivorship, and connect people with others who share their journey.

 The Issue


  • In 2019, nearly 9,904 deaths in the U.S. were attributed to aortic aneurysms and dissections. CDC 
  • Aortic disease (aneurysms, dissections, etc.) can account for a significant portion of sudden, unexplained deaths — some reports suggest it may underlie ~10% of sudden deaths in certain populations. AHA Journals 
  • Thoracic aortic aneurysms are hard to track precisely because many are asymptomatic; estimates suggest an incidence of 5 to 10 cases per million people per year for acute dissections in developed countries. Wikipedia+1 
  • Heart valve disease affects over 5 million Americans and is responsible for around 25,000 deaths per year in the U.S. CDC+1 
  • Public awareness is low: about 75% of U.S. adults know little to nothing about heart valve disease. CDC+1

  • Rock from the Heart supports families from diagnosis through recovery by connecting them with trusted resources and often hard-to-find information.
     
  • When patients and their loved ones understand the fundamentals of aortic disease, they’re better equipped to advocate for themselves and engage meaningfully with their medical teams.
     

Awareness saves lives. Rock from the Heart produces events—concerts, seminars, and workshops—to shine a spotlight on aortic diseases and heart valve conditions. Through music and education, we:


  • Communicate new research and clinical information to the public 
  • Raise awareness of warning signs, especially in underserved or under-informed populations 
  • Work to reduce barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care 
  • Serve as a voice for patients and families, advocating for timely access to proper care, better outcomes, and improved quality of life

    2022 ACC/AHA Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Aortic Disease

    The 2022 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Aortic Disease (ACC/AHA Aortic Disease Guideline) provides guidance for clinicians on the “diagnosis, genetic evaluation and family screening, medical therapy, endovascular and surgical treatment, and long-term surveillance of patients with aortic disease.”
